In October 2006, in the context of a suspension of the WTO 'Doha Round', the European Union has set itself new targets for its external trade policy in the Communication 'Global Europe - Competing in the World'. This document sets a new vision for the EU trade policy by integrating it with the Lisbon agenda. This new strategy on 'external aspects of competitiveness' promotes a plain de-regulation agenda in favour of European business, with little regard to fundamental issues such as sustainable development, poverty eradication or economic sovereignty.
